What Makes Our African Workshops Unique?

Our African Workshops for schools provide a unique opportunity for children to explore the vibrant cultures of the African continent while developing key life skills. From mastering rhythms to expressing stories through dance, these sessions engage children on both a physical and emotional level, fostering growth beyond the classroom.

What truly sets our sessions apart is the sheer level of engagement and the specialist nature of our facilitators. We don’t just demonstrate. We ensure that every child has their own instrument or space to move, making it a truly interactive experience. Whether it is the resonant sound of the djembe drum or the rhythmic patterns of a traditional dance routine, each session is designed to be inclusive and accessible for all ability levels.

The importance of these sessions lies in their ability to combine physical activity with creative expression. In an age where children are often stationary, our African Workshops provide a necessary outlet for energy and a unique way to develop motor skills. By focusing on the technical aspects of West African drumming and the specific movements of African Dance, we provide a structured yet exhilarating environment where children can excel.

Our facilitators are experts in managing group dynamics, ensuring that every session is safe, productive, and filled with “lightbulb moments” for the children while also strengthening their listening skills.

Our Specialist Workshops

We offer two workshops that can be booked individually or booked in combination to provide two full days of rhythmic exploration.

African Drumming

African Drumming is one of our most popular African Workshops for schools. During these sessions, children are introduced to the djembe, a versatile hand drum capable of producing a wide range of tones. Our facilitators guide the children through the basics of hand positioning, learning how to produce clear 'bass' and 'tone' sounds before moving on to complex rhythms.
The focus here is on pulse and rhythm. children learn to listen to one another, understanding how their individual beats contribute to the overall sound of the ensemble. This promotes teamwork and concentration, as the children must stay in sync to maintain the energy of the piece.
We use call-and-response techniques that keep everyone on their toes, making the drumming an excellent way to improve auditory memory and coordination. By the end of the session, year groups often find themselves performing a complete rhythmic composition that sounds professional and powerful.

African Dance

Our African Dance workshops are a high-octane celebration of the art of movement. These sessions are designed to get children moving in ways they never have before, utilising full-body coordination and rhythmic footwork. The dance routines we teach are energetic and physically demanding, providing a fantastic cardiovascular workout while being immensely fun.
Whether it is a solo moment or a synchronised group routine, African Dance allows for a level of creative freedom that is rarely found in standard PE lessons. It is a brilliant way to boost mental wellbeing and provide a sense of liberation through physical activity.

How Our African Workshops Benefit Students

The impact of our African Workshops for schools extends far beyond the duration of the workshop itself. By participating in these high-energy sessions, children gain a variety of developmental benefits that support their overall growth within the school environment and contribute to meaningful cultural enrichment.

Physical Development

Both African Dance and African Drumming require a high degree of physical control. For younger children in EYFS and KS1, the focus is on developing basic motor skills and coordination. Learning to strike a drum in a specific spot or following a simple dance step helps refine these abilities. For older participants in KS2, the complexity increases, challenging their stamina, agility, and fine motor control. These workshops are a great way to encourage a healthy, active lifestyle by showing that physical exercise can be joyful and creative.

Mental and Emotional Wellbeing

Engaging in group music and dance is a proven way to reduce stress and build emotional resilience. The sense of belonging that comes from playing in a drumming circle or dancing in a troupe is powerful. It fosters a supportive atmosphere where children feel comfortable taking risks and trying new things.

This boost in confidence often translates back into the classroom, as children feel more capable and self-assured in their learning. Our workshops provide a safe space for children to release energy and express themselves, which is vital for maintaining a positive mental state.

Enhancing the National Curriculum

While our African Workshops for schools are primarily about the activity, they align perfectly with the National Curriculum requirements for Music and Physical Education across secondary schools as well as primary settings in the UK. In Music, children engage with different styles and genres, learning about pulse, rhythm, and ensemble performance. In PE, they develop flexibility, strength, technique, and control through dance.

By bringing in specialist facilitators, schools can provide a depth of expertise that enriches the existing curriculum and provides children with a broader perspective on what they can achieve within these subjects.

What to Expect from a Primary Workshops for Schools Session

When you book one of our African Workshops, you are choosing a professional, hassle-free experience that is tailored to your school’s specific needs.

Tailored to Year Groups

We understand that a session for Reception children needs to look very different from a session for Year 6. Our facilitators are skilled at adapting their delivery style and the complexity of the tasks to suit the age and ability of the participants.
For younger children, we focus on play, simple rhythms, and big, expressive movements. As the children get older, we introduce more technical terminology and complex structures, ensuring that every child is appropriately challenged and remains fully engaged throughout the day.

Professional Facilitators

Every one of our instructors is a specialist in their field with extensive experience working in educational settings. They arrive fully equipped with all the necessary instruments and resources, requiring very little from the school other than a suitable space like a hall or large classroom. Experienced in working with school groups, our facilitators deliver energetic, well-structured workshops that keep children engaged while teachers remain present to support behaviour and ensure a positive learning environment.

Testimonials

“The African Drumming workshop was the highlight of our term. The facilitator had the whole of Year 5 in the palm of their hand, and the sound they produced together was incredible. It really helped with our team working skills.” — Deputy Headteacher, London

“Our students loved the African Dance session! It was so high-energy and inclusive. Even the children who are usually shy were right at the front, giving it their all. A truly excellent way to spend a morning.” — PE Coordinator, Manchester

Frequently Asked Questions

Do we need to provide the drums?

No, we provide all the djembes and any other equipment needed for the sessions. All we need is a clear space and a group of enthusiastic participants!

Are the workshops suitable for SEN students?
