Bring movement, music, and culture to life with our immersive Dance Workshops, designed to captivate children while enhancing their physical and creative skills.
From exploring global traditions to stepping back in time with historical dances, our workshops introduce children to different dance styles while offering an engaging way to develop confidence, coordination, and cultural appreciation. Aligned with the National Curriculum, these sessions provide a fun and educational break from routine classroom activities.
Through the power of rhythmic movement and creative expression, we provide an unforgettable experience that stays with children long after the music stops. Our primary goal is to ensure that every session is not just an add-on, but a vital part of a child’s educational journey, sparking a lifelong interest in physical activity and the performing arts. Whether you are looking to celebrate a specific theme or simply want to boost the well-being of your children, our Dance Workshops for schools offer the perfect solution for young people to stay active and creative.
By partnering with Primary Workshops for Schools, you are choosing a provider committed to excellence. We understand the pressures of the modern school environment, which is why our facilitators handle the heavy lifting, allowing teachers to observe their children in a completely different light. Our sessions are high-energy, inclusive, and tailored to meet the specific needs of your setting, ensuring that no child is left behind on the dance floor.
What Makes Our Dance Workshops Unique?
What sets our Dance Workshops apart is our dedication to hands-on, active learning that prioritises the joy of movement. We don’t just show children how to move. We invite them to dive into the rhythm, ensuring every child is an active participant from start to finish.
Our facilitators are specialists in their field, bringing years of professional experience and a passion for education into your school hall. This expertise allows us to adapt quickly to different age groups, from EYFS to Key Stage 2, ensuring the level of challenge is just right.
Furthermore, we focus on the specific activity of the dance itself. While many providers might offer generic movement sessions, our Dance Workshops for schools are structured to teach authentic steps and sequences inspired by traditional and modern styles. This precision helps children feel a genuine sense of achievement as they master a new skill.
We also pride ourselves on our flexibility. We adapt to your school’s schedule to make the day run as smoothly as possible.
The Importance of Dance in Primary Schools
In the modern curriculum, the importance of physical literacy cannot be overstated. Dance is a unique medium because it bridges the gap between physical education and the arts, offering a holistic approach to child development. It provides an essential outlet for creative expression, allowing children to communicate feelings and ideas through their bodies when words might not be enough. This is particularly beneficial for building self-esteem in children who may struggle with traditional academic subjects.
Regular participation in dance workshops also has significant mental health benefits. It reduces stress, improves mood through the release of endorphins, and fosters a sense of community as children work together to create a cohesive performance.
In an era where screen time is at an all-time high, providing a space for children to be physically active in a fun, non-competitive environment is crucial for their overall well-being.
Skills our Dance Workshops for Schools Develop
Dance is a powerful way to engage children’s minds and bodies simultaneously. Through our Dance Workshops, children will develop key skills such as coordination, creativity, and teamwork while gaining an appreciation for the arts and cultures from around the world.
Beyond these core skills, children also improve their spatial awareness and fine motor control. As they learn to navigate the dance floor alongside their peers, they develop a keen sense of where they are in relation to others, which is a vital life skill. The focus required to memorise a sequence of steps enhances cognitive function and discipline, teaching children the value of practice and perseverance while learning foundational basics.
Socially, our Dance Workshops are a powerhouse for development. Many of our routines require children to participate in pairs or small groups, necessitating clear communication and mutual support. This collaborative environment helps break down social barriers and builds stronger bonds within the class. By the end of a session, children often feel a collective sense of pride, having worked together to produce something beautiful and energetic.
Types of Dance Workshops Available
We offer a diverse range of Dance Workshops, ensuring there is something to suit every school’s needs and interests. Each session is carefully planned to be age-appropriate and engaging for all levels of ability, including beginners.
- African Dance: A high-energy session focusing on powerful movements and rhythmic footwork that children find absolutely infectious.
- Indian Dance: Vibrant, colourful, and incredibly fun, this workshop combines Bollywood dance with modern cinematic flair.
- Chinese Dragon Dance: A truly unique experience where we work with 30 children at a time. This session is special because we don’t just teach the dragon dance. We also incorporate the Chinese Umbrella and Fan dances. This ensures that while 10 children are under the dragon, others are mastering the elegant styles of movement of the fans and umbrellas, creating a full performance for the Chinese New Year or any celebration. – either we need to make this shorter to match the others or make the others bigger
- Glow Dance: Children learn fun, fitness-inspired dance routines under UV and disco lights while using a pair of glow sticks, creating an exciting and immersive atmosphere. This workshop focuses on energetic Zumba-style movement rather than choreography for a performance, making it perfect for reward days or Sports Week.
- International Dance: Each class can explore a different cultural dance style, from African and Caribbean rhythms to European and Asian influences. Schools can choose up to eight different styles across the day, or we can tailor sessions to specific countries if required.
- Morris Dance: Our Morris Dance workshop introduces children to the lively tradition of this classic British folk dance. Children learn rhythmic, pattern-based steps using traditional props including white handkerchiefs and wrist or ankle bells.
- Sound of Musicals Dance: A lively celebration of stage and screen, with routines inspired by favourite musicals and stories such as Matilda, The Lion King, and The Greatest Showman. Each session can focus on a different musical or story theme, making every class feel fresh and exciting. Schools can choose from a wide range of books and musicals, and we’re happy to tailor sessions to specific requests.
- South American Dance: Children learn lively routines inspired by Latin styles such as Salsa, Samba, Rumba and Cha-Cha, all set to music that gets everyone moving. Schools can choose different dance styles for each session if they’d like to explore a variety of Latin traditions.
- Strictly Ballroom Dance: Our Strictly Ballroom Dance workshop brings the sparkle and excitement of ballroom dancing straight into your school. Children learn fun, age-appropriate routines inspired by classic styles such as the Waltz, Jive and Cha-Cha. Schools can choose from a wide range of ballroom and Latin dance styles, allowing different classes to explore different routines across the day.
- Turn Back Time Dance: Our Turn Back Time Dance workshop takes children on an energetic journey through the decades. They explore iconic dance styles from different eras, from the Charleston and Rock ’n’ Roll to Disco, Hip Hop and modern street dance. Schools can select different decades or styles for each session, making it a fun and flexible way to explore dance through history.
- World Book Day Dance: Our World Book Day Dance workshop brings stories to life through music, movement and imagination. Children explore well-known books and characters through creative dance inspired by titles such as The Gruffalo, Matilda and The Wizard of Oz. Schools can choose from a wide range of stories and we encourage participants to dress up to make the experience even more magical.
- World Cup Dance: Our World Cup Dance workshop celebrates the excitement and colour of the tournament through energetic dance routines inspired by different footballing nations. Each class represents a country and explores its music and movement style while performing with handheld flags. We can even provide medals for children to receive during the final performance, adding an extra celebratory touch to the day.
- WWI / WWII Dance: Children learn popular wartime dance styles such as the Lindy Hop, Charleston and Jive while exploring how dance helped lift spirits during challenging times. It’s a unique and engaging way to support history topics or Remembrance Week.
- Pick ’n’ Mix Dance: A flexible and creative celebration of dance. Each class can try a different style, from street dance and musicals to world dance and themed routines linked to events like World Book Day or cultural celebrations. Schools can choose from almost all of our dance styles, making it a great way to cover multiple themes in one exciting day.
Each of these Dance Workshops for schools is designed to be self-contained, though many primary schools choose to book multiple sessions to create a dedicated ‘Dance Day’ or ‘Arts Week’. No matter which style you choose, our facilitators ensure the energy remains high and the children remain fully focused on the joy of the activity.
Curriculum Alignment and Educational Benefits
Our Dance Workshops are meticulously designed to align with the National Curriculum-based framework used across the UK. We understand that every minute of the school day is precious, so we ensure our sessions provide measurable educational value. For EYFS, we focus on ‘Expressive Arts and Design’ and ‘Physical Development’, helping the youngest children explore movement and respond to music.
For Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2, our workshops hit multiple PE targets, including performing dances using a range of movement patterns and developing flexibility, strength, technique, control, and balance. By integrating these sessions into your timetable, you are providing a high-quality PE experience that meets statutory requirements while being immensely enjoyable.
We also provide teachers with the opportunity for CPD (Continuing Professional Development) by observing our expert facilitators in action, picking up tips and routines they can use in future lessons.
What to Expect During a Session
When you book one of our Dance Workshops, we aim to make the process as simple as possible. On the day, our facilitator will arrive with all the necessary equipment, including music and any specific props (such as the fans and umbrellas for our Chinese Dragon sessions – do we need to put this in here?). A standard session usually lasts between 45 to 60 minutes, allowing us to work with several different classes throughout the school day.
Each workshop begins with a dynamic warm-up to prepare the children’s bodies and minds. We then move into the core teaching phase, where we break down complex movements into simple, manageable steps drawn from different dance styles. This ‘building block’ approach ensures that even children who lack confidence in dancing can feel successful.
The session typically culminates in a group performance, where the children put everything they have learned together into a final routine. It is a moment of great pride for the children and a fantastic photo opportunity for the school, or involve your entire school community.
